Defining Lolita: the Novel and the Name Essay -- Essays Papers

Characterizing Lolita: the Novel and the Name In his paper, On a Novel Entitled Lolita, Vladimir Nabokov attempts to respond to the deep rooted question, What is the goal of the novel? He rapidly answers, ...I happen to be the sort of writer who in beginning to take a shot at a book has no other reason than to dispose of that book... (311). There is something else entirely to his reaction than this, be that as it may. He proceeds to state that his book was not composed to praise erotic entertainment or pedophilia, nor was it composed to advance Anti-Americanism (313 - 315). What's the motivation behind his novel at that point? All things considered, Nabokov expresses, For me a work of fiction exists just to the extent that it manages me what I will gruffly call stylish happiness, that is a feeling of being some way or another, some place, associated with different conditions of being the place craftsmanship (interest, delicacy, consideration, bliss) is the standard (314 - 315). He sees his novel in straightforward terms: workman ship. Regardless of whether it be the novel Lolita or the name Lolita, a sexual importance has been given to the word Lolita, and this is to a great extent because of the solid sexual suggestions utilized by the novel's fundamental character Humbert to portray his character of fixation Lolita; in this way bringing about various and befuddling translations of the novel and the creator's goals. In his exposition, On a Novel Entitled Lolita, Vladimir Nabokov attempts to respond to the well established inquiry, What is the target of the novel? He rapidly answers, ...I happen to be the sort of writer who in beginning to deal with a book has no other reason than to dispose of that book... (311). There is something else entirely to his reaction than this, nonetheless. He proceeds to state that his book was not composed to commend sex entertainment or pedophilia, nor was it composed to advance Anti-Americanism (313 - 315). What's the... ... reason behind the book, despite the fact that it isn't the reason the author planned. This is the less normal understanding of the novel, as is evident by the cutting edge meaning of the name Lolita. Since Humbert characterizes Lolita in such an explicitly unequivocal way, her name has become an image of sex and enchantment; this brought about the generally misjudged reason for the novel. Humbert clarified it the best when before his passing he composed: Along these lines, neither of us is alive when the peruser opens this book...and one needed H.H. to exist at any rate two or three months longer, in order to have him make you live in the brains of later ages. I am considering aurochs and blessed messengers, the mystery of sturdy shades, prophetic poems, the asylum of art...(309). Surrender it over to the principle character of Lolita to summarize Nabokov's motivation for composing the novel. Emerson and the Bible A Major Transcendentalists View of God - Literature Essay Samples

One of the greatest problems that readers have when reading Emerson’s work is grasping his religious beliefs. Religion is essential to Emerson because every essay he wrote seems filled with references to earning a more perfect relationship with God. Emersons emphasis on a â€Å"universal soul flowing through individual souls† can strike us as mystical and abstract, and, therefore, hard to grasp. Emersons belief in individualism and accepting Unitarian principles, this is based fundamentally on someone’s private relationship with God and on the individuals own judgment in matters of morals and ethics. Contrary to biblical Christianity, Emerson believes God is an image of what we should try to be like, we are the individual that trumps everything in society, and to be right with God we must be perfect. Rather than seeing the truth about God, Emerson believed God was no more divine than you or I. Emerson saw Jesus not as God, but as the most significant example of what all humans should look up to. Emerson says about God, â€Å"One man was true to what is in you and me. He saw that God incarnates himself in Man, and evermore goes forth anew to take possession of his world. (Emerson, Divinity School Address) Emerson’s view of God suggests that people should not necessarily believe in a God through ideas seen in the Bible, and shown in nature, but instead use their own understanding through poetry and philosophy to determine their own God. His beliefs do not reflect a Christian worldview. Instead, they base man’s salvation on his own intuition. The bible says God is creator and redeemer of Humans. The Bible reads, â€Å"For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.† (ESV, Colossians 1:16) The Bible clearly state s that God is our creator, redeemer, father, and King. God is the divine being who died for our sins, came back to life to save us from our sins, and show us how to live a life of Righteousness. Even with so many different views of who God is today, there is only one logical explanation for who God is. God is our creator and redeemer; we are his people. In Emerson’s point of view, we are the head of ourselves, and there is no greater person. In the Bible’s point of view, God is our King, and if we trust in him, we can become Children of God. In terms of human perspective Emerson believes people to should see the things in the world as minor details of the whole universe and to trust their own intuitions. â€Å"Society is a joint stock company in which the members agree for the better securing of his bread to each shareholder to surrender the liberty and culture of the eater.†(Emerson) Emerson teaches that society pushes for conformity and not what is best for us and as a result, he builds up a picture of how society has become an institution that deprives its members of basic freedoms important to self-reliance. The Bible says that if we believe in Christ, we are children of God. â€Å"Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God† (John 1:12) People do nothing to deserve being a child of God, there is nothing people can do to take it away. People can’t become more of aâ€Å"child of God† by his/her own merits, and people canâ₠¬â„¢t become less of a â€Å"child of God† by someones mistakes. It’s easy to compare ourselves to others, and easier to think we’re better than people who are living their lives in sin. In reality, we’re no better than they are. Contrary to what Emerson believes and teaches, God tells us no actions can get us right with God, only through the Holy Spirit can we be saved. Emerson, in another departure from purely traditional theology, believes that salvation depends on intuiting our soul’s connections to what He says is the â€Å"World-Soul† or â€Å"Over-Soul†. The more we come to realize this â€Å"Over-Soul, the more perfect we become. Emerson says, â€Å"Nature has a higher end, in the production of new individuals than security, namely ascension, or the passage of the soul into higher forms.† (Emerson) Emerson’s view suggests that an individual can reach truths through spiritual intuitions that surpasses reason and a clear experience. Their basic point was a belief that God is present in everything. The Bible says that in order to be saved, we must trust in Jesus Christ. â€Å"If you declare with your mouth, â€Å"Jesus is Lord† and believe in your heart that God rose from the dead, you will be saved.† To be saved we must understand and truly believe the gospel, repent of our sinful way of life, b e baptized by water into Christ, and live a new life by the commandments of Christ. The only accurate way to be saved and to get right with God is through him. Not by works of righteousness, but by the renewal of the Holy Spirit. Contrary to biblical Christianity, Emerson believes God is an image of what we should try to be like, we are the individual that trumps everything in society, and to be right with God we must be perfect. To Emerson, God is a normal human being who we should look up to, we are the individual that is the head of everything, and to be right with God we must be flawless. The Bible says that God is the authority, we are his people, and to be right with him we must believe in him. Emerson had the wrong view of Christianity. The only way people can be truly happy is to submit to Christ.

A Moment in Time Essay Example For Students

A Moment in Time Essay I was a junior in high school, nothing more. I was a statistic, on the verge of becoming nothing. All interest in school and becoming something better had vanished from all aspects of my mind, not considering myself to be a terrible kid, just mislead, not understood, maybe a little confused. Not knowing what life had to offer, what school had to offer, genuinely I still do not, but I know more now than I did then. Inevitably if you want something you have to go out and grasp it; our drive is our passion, we have to create the utmost implausible future that we are destined to have. At the time that was something I did not believe, in the moment I did not believe in much of anything. Something was missing and I did not know what it was, wanting to be different, not wanting to be like every other existing teenage statistic in this world, a screw-up. I am my own mind, unique, I just had not found my flame and had it not been for my best friend I do not think I ever would have. Now usually what I’m about to say may shock most, mostly because they can’t believe it to be true or just blatant ignorance. My best friend was a female wrestler, yes a female wrestler and I myself soon to follow; when you think of wrestling most people think of WWE for some reason, that is not real wrestling, wrestling is not entertainment; meaning it is not something that should be paraded around as a joke and to me that is what WWE is a joke. To be a wrestler, a female wrestler at that it takes strength and willpower, mental and physical willpower. Entering a world of a male dominant sport as a female you are putting not two times but three times as much work in as any other guy, day in and day out. And this is exactly what I needed, although truthfully I didnt join for all the right reasons; I mean really, male dominant sport, hot guys, sweat, abs it was a match made in heaven. So yes I went to a couple of practices, I watched I learned but more importantly I learned. I started growing an attachment to the sport, all girly childish thoughts no longer existed. Watching my best friend and the guys’ practice I thought how easy it could be to take someone down, it truly did not look that hard. That is until I actually stepped foot on the mat. One day we were going live action and I got slammed pretty hard by my partner, from that day on all I could think of was all of the different ways I could tear his face off. Every day he laid my face in the mat and everyday was a day I swore it would never happen again. I practiced and brought my grades up as best as I could in order to stay on the team. One day he went to suplexed me, I was quick on my feet, not remembering exactly what happened but I took him down and it was sweet it was a sweet, sweet victory. I came in at the end of boy season or co-ed some may say, so no I did not get to compete, but in march 2012 PSAL had announced its first ever girls freestyle season. Only being on the team for less than a month I was coming in strong. I grabbed a Bronze medal my first ever tournament and from there I knew that this was my purpose, I had found my flame. Three days later I was a part of the female travel team, representing team New York kicking butt and bringing home some shiny medals. Evidently it was never really about the medals or how shiny they were, it was about what they represented and what they still represent. My medals represent my hard work, my good sportsmanship, my medals represent my coaches, my struggles and my triumphs, they represent what makes me this incredible young woman I am today. I found a family a bound that is stronger than no other, only a wrestler will understand the countless hours you put in and only they know the true blood, sweat, and tears that you have shed to get to the top. .u2f53cbc8f942e7acfe7f8e9ce231a55c , .u2f53cbc8f942e7acfe7f8e9ce231a55c .postImageUrl , .u2f53cbc8f942e7acfe7f8e9ce231a55c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u2f53cbc8f942e7acfe7f8e9ce231a55c , .u2f53cbc8f942e7acfe7f8e9ce231a55c:hover , .u2f53cbc8f942e7acfe7f8e9ce231a55c:visited , .u2f53cbc8f942e7acfe7f8e9ce231a55c:active { border:0!important; } .u2f53cbc8f942e7acfe7f8e9ce231a55c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u2f53cbc8f942e7acfe7f8e9ce231a55c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u2f53cbc8f942e7acfe7f8e9ce231a55c:active , .u2f53cbc8f942e7acfe7f8e9ce231a55c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u2f53cbc8f942e7acfe7f8e9ce231a55c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u2f53cbc8f942e7acfe7f8e9ce231a55c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u2f53cbc8f942e7acfe7f8e9ce231a55c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u2f53cbc8f942e7acfe7f8e9ce231a55c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u2f53cbc8f942e7acfe7f8e9ce231a55c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u2f53cbc8f942e7acfe7f8e9ce231a55c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u2f53cbc8f942e7acfe7f8e9ce231a55c .u2f53cbc8f942e7acfe7f8e9ce231a55c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u2f53cbc8f942e7acfe7f8e9ce231a55c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Doctrine Of The Mean Aristotle EssayI thank god every day for my wrestling family; they held me up when I was weak and pushed me above my heels because they knew what great things I would accomplish. They have shown me that I am not that girl who did not see a future for herself before, that I am above all doubts and that I need to take that penetration step and brake through my glass, That failure is not failure, that to lose is to gain because if you don’t lose you will never learn and if you don’t feel pain you will never feel a true victory. I was starting to realize my capabilities that if I put my mind to something and never gave up that achieving my goals would be a lot easier. So with help I took wrestling and applied it to real life, I stood my ground and when things got tough I wanted to quit but I didnt because I knew what was waiting for me on the other side, my road to success. I am ready for whatever life throws at me because I have wrestled, my eyes are open to the opportunities life has in store for me. I owe it to wrestling for creating this glorious path for me because that’s what it is glorious it ignites within me. To be a female wrestler is a tremendous honor, it is an honor because I get to walk in the footsteps of the many great women who set out this path for me. It is an honor because I have learned that life is hard and it will always be hard, nothing in life will ever be handed to you, chase after what you desire and do what makes you happy because what is life if you are not happy. Wrestling has saved me and I’m glad Ive found it, I’m glad I never gave up on myself , I’m glad my coaches never gave up on me, I’m grateful for them and would not trade them in for anything. This is how I found wrestling or should I say how wrestling found me, this is truly a moment in my life that will always hold utmost importance to me and for that I will always be grateful. Words from the coaches that push me everyday. â€Å"It’s the new year in four hours you need to never be afraid of anyone or anything! Believe! I will help you be the best!

Nba vs Ncaa Should High School Players Be Allowed Essay Example

Nba vs Ncaa Should High School Players Be Allowed Essay The National basketball association is the worlds premiere basketballs association. Basketball players from around the world come to showcase their talent on the NBA’s stage. The sport of basketball is played by people of all ages, sexes, and races especially the youth. The youth of all nations have grown found to the sport of basketball and the NBA has inspired many young kids to follow their dreams and become NBA players as they hope to win NBA championships and and NBA honors such as the most valuable player award(MVP). In the past the NBA has drafted exceptional high school players into the league but that has changed as the NBA modified their regulations to say for all draft picks to be at least 19 years of age and have spent a year out of high school. This regulation directly sends high school players to at least a year of college meaning a year away from their dreams of being a NBA player. From their controversy arises as the question is asked should the NBA draft high school players? I say no I believe the NBA should not draft high school, however there are pros and cons to both sides of the argument and there are NBA players that are proven examples of both sides of the argument. Dumornay 2 Even though There are â€Å"disaster stories of players entering the N. B. A. draft from high school and failing spectacularly. But as tragic as these stories are, they are the exception. A study by Michael McCann, a professor at Vermont Law School who is an expert on sports and legal issues, found that f the 21 high school players who declared for the draft from 1975 to 2001, four became superstars—Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, Jermaine ONeal, and Tracy McGrady—and only four never made it to the N. B. A. The results were similar with those drafted from the classes of 2002 through 2005, when the ban was put in place: Of the 26 players drafted, 20 were still playing through last season and three have become superstars: Amare Stoudemire, Dwight Howard, and LeBron J ames. † Buzz Bissinger Author, Friday Night Lights. These high school players want to chase their dreams as soon as possible and see the rule of waiting a year after high school as cruel and unfair. They see the rule as an obstacle stopping them from chasing their dreams and having financial security. The fact that one year can be so unpredictable players would like to sign their blockbuster contracts straight out of school avoiding any injuries or accident that can prevent them from being drafted. Its true these 18 year old kids have responsibilities to their families and to themselves to be successful in their trade. So they ask what makes it right for the N. B. A to to take those rights away from them. Some say the fact the high school students were allowed to follow their dreams right after high school made the sport even more attractive especially more attractive the the National football league which requires at least three years of collegiate play to be eligible for the draft. Those who are Dumornay 3 against the rule say the rule has no substantial support behind it being that the N. B. A best player and most prominent star was drafted straight out of high school. Yes its true Lebron James is labeled the best player in the N. B. A well the best player in the world and he was drafted out of high school in the 2003 draft and has excelled ever since. Viewed as the Michael Jordan of his time Lebron James was a 18 year old six foot eight inches small forward out of St. Vincent-St. Mary’s High school in Akron, Ohio who would be the number one overall pick in 2003 draft as he was taken by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Lebron James gave the city of Cleveland and the Cavaliers life as they now had the most promising young player. And today Lebron James is the face of the N. B. A he well represents the N. B. A as being well mannered and everything a N. B. A mega star could be. However not everyone is as lucky and gifted as Lebron James for that reason the rule is in place. Many times high school players who got straight to the N. B. A with no college play have the outcome of being draft bust. As there promise never came to reality and become a bad picture for the N. B. A as an organization. These immature 18 year old kids become burdens for the N. B. A. They become wild teens with large amounts of money and endless possibilities of getting in trouble. These teens misrepresent the N. B. A some have been on the cover of news stands for outrageous incidents they’ve partaken in , some cant handle media pressure and let emotions overwhelm them some quite frankly cant speak proper english in interviews. The policy of draft picks required to be out of high school is established to prevent these antics. Its to encourage these players to go play college ball in the Dumornay 4 National Collegiate Athletic Association to prepare them for the league. The NCAA prepares players for many essential things draft picks will need to be successful in the N. B. A. They will be further educated young men with experience of playing on a big stage not just the high school stage. They will know how to handle media and most importantly they will know how to conduct themselves as young men. The NCAA is much more disciplinary then the N. B. A so college players have a sense of urgency in knowing what to do and what not to do to stay out of trouble. If every draft pick gains the maturity needed in college then when they get to league they will be ready for the N. B. A stage. The N. B. A states â€Å"the N. B. A. s minimum-age requirement for players seeking to be drafted is, quite simply, good business for the league. The policy, which requires that a player be at least 19 and a year beyond the graduation of his high school class, is designed to make sure N. B. A. eams use their extremely valuable draft picks to acquire the players most likely to improve their teams performance. Before the current rule took effect in 2005, our teams had no choice but to evaluate high school players who had never competed at an elite level. Evaluating young talent in any sport can be extremely difficult; by increasing the minimum entry age, we gave teams at least one year to evaluate players in a more competitive setting. That can be in college, in the N. B. A. Development League, or in an international league. In those settings, players have the opportunity to mature as well, making them better able to deal with rigorous playing and travel schedules in the N. B. A. While a few N. B. A. -ready players have emerged right out of high school, it still took them time to grow their game. Most high school stars arent ready to play in the N. B. A. Between 1995 and 2005, nine high school players who entered the draft went unpicked; if they had planned for a basketball life between high school and the N. B. A. , they might have been in a better position to succeed in the draft the following year, or to succeed in life. We believe that requiring an additional year beyond high school strikes a fair balance between the needs of our teams and the desire of young athletes to begin their professional careers as soon as possible. The policy has improved players chances for success and made our league stronger. †- David Stern N. B. A. Commissioner To conclude although there are both pros and cons to the N. B. A policy of draft picks being required to be the minimum age of 19 and out of high school for at least a year is a reality. And stands as the N. B. A’s most controversial rule. I believe the N. B. A made the right call in implementing the policy. I say so because overall the pros overwhelm the cons. If a player has the opportunity to improve his education, his maturity, and his readiness for the next level then he should absolutely take the opportunity and that is exactly what the NCAA offers to the high school players. If I was an N. B. A general manager I would feel better about a player who spent a year playing college ball knowing he is more prepared for the N. B. A than a year ago. I believe the policy is made in the best interest of the players. The average N. B. A player’s career is 4. years long and this policy aims to produce better prepared players who are ready to take the N. B. A by storm and live up to their promise and most importantly have a longer career than 4. 8 years. The policy is placed to prevent N. B. A teams from picking a Kwame Brown who was the number one pick in 2001 and since then has just been a failure. Kwame Brown came straight out of high school and was never given the chance to develop his game and had a bad career as his paycheck drove him away from the gym. He was a disappointment as he would get suspended often and always in controversy. With this policy there will not be another Kwame Brown.

Celebrate Thanksgiving in Spanish

Celebrate Thanksgiving in Spanish Prepare to speak Spanish on Thanksgiving by learning these words. Many of these words dont have much of a cultural context outside the U.S. and Canada (which celebrates its Thanksgiving in October), as no Spanish-speaking countries have a version of Thanksgiving. The phrase  for Thanksgiving, by the way, is Dà a de Accià ³n de Gracias. Thats a mouthful that could be translated literally as the day of the act of thanks. The French form is similar  -   the Canadian Thanksgiving is known as lAction de Grà ¢ce. Holiday-Related Words agradecido (por) - thankful (for)ciberlunes  - Cyber Mondayla colonia - colonycompartir, repartir - to shareel cuerno de la abundancia, la cornucopia - cornucopiael desfile - paradeDios - Godla familia - familyla festividad de la cosecha - harvest festivalel fà ºtbol americano - football (not soccer)gluglà º gluglà º - gobble gobble (turkey sound)las gracias - thanksel indio, la india, el indà gena americano, la indà gena americana  - American Indian, native Americanel noviembre - Novemberel otoà ±o - autumn, falllos parientes  - relativesel peregrino - pilgrimel viernes negro, el viernes de descuentos  - Black Friday Food-Related Words Keep in mind that names of foods dont necessarily translate well, or might not be understood in Spanish-speaking countries, due to cultural differences. For example, the various words that can be translated as pie include pastel, tarta, empanada, and even pay (pronounced similarly to the English word). All of those words except the last also refer to other types of desserts. Also, it is common with fruits and vegetables for a popular name to be applied to multiple botanical classifications. For example, there are at least eight species of tuberous plants called  Ãƒ ±ames (yams), and a few are unlike what you might find in the U.S.   el arndano rojo - cranberryel banquete - feastel budà n, el pudà n - puddingla cazuela - casserolela cena - dinnercomer - to eatla cucurbitcea,  la calabaza - squash (the same Spanish terms also are used for other related plants)el maà z - cornla mazorca de maà z - corn on the cobel à ±ame, la batata, el boniato - yamel panecillo - dinner rollel pastel (o la tarta) de calabaza  - pumpkin pieel pavo  - turkeyel pavo asado  - roast turkeyel purà © de patatas - mashed potatoesel relleno - stuffing, turkey dressingla salsa para carne - gravylas sobras, los restos - leftoverslas verduras - vegetables Vocabulary Notes Ñame, the word for yam is one of the few Spanish words to start with  Ãƒ ±. Among the more common ones are à ±oà ±o (insipid or dull) and words derived from it, à ±ora (red pepper), and à ±u (gnu). Panecillo shows how diminutive suffixes are used. Pan is the word for bread, so even if you didnt know what panecillo means, you might guess that it is a small type of bread. In Spanish, it is sometimes possible to distinguish between  male and female animals by using the masculine and feminine forms of the word. Thus a female turkey is una pava. Some other animal names follow a similar pattern: Una mona is a female monkey, una polla is a young hen (and also an off-color word with a different meaning), and una puerca is a sow. But dont assume that any feminine animal name refers to the feminine of the species. For example, una jirafa is a giraffe regardless of its sex. While  relleno would normally be used to refer to turkey stuffing, the same word can be used for just about any type of food filling. A stuffed chili, for example, is known as a chile relleno. While verduras is the word to use when talking about vegetables as a food, vegetales is used more often when talking about vegetables as a type of plant. Sample Sentences Los indios de la tribu de los Wampanoag enseà ±aron a los peregrinos cà ³mo sembrar maà z. (The Indians of the Wampanoag tribe taught the pilgrims how to plant corn.) No es difà cil prepara un pavo exquisito para celebrar el dà a con tus amigos y familiares. (It isnt difficult to prepare a delicious turkey for celebrating the day with your friends and family members.) Despuà ©s de la cena, vamos a ver un juego de fà ºtbol americano. (After dinner, well watch a football game.) Tenemos mucha gratitud por todo lo que tenemos. (Were grateful for everything we have.) Key Takeaways No Spanish-speaking country has a version of Thanksgiving, so native Spanish speakers in those countries may have little cultural context when dealing with Thanksgiving-related words. When translating holiday-related words to Spanish, keep in mind that there may be only a partial correlation between meanings. For example, while a gravy is salsa in Spanish, salsa can refer to many other types of sauce as well. The Spanish phrase for the holiday itself is a long one: Dia de Accià ³n de Gracias.
